Our therapist, Cayetana Calderon-Smith, is driven by a key question: How does technology impact mental health?
This question guides Therapy 2.0's specialist focus. It is reinforced by Cayetana's former career in design, digital marketing & user data collection, which led to her insider knowledge of technology's ability to impact behaviors, relationships, culture and identity.
At-a-glance:
Cayetana works with emerging adults & adults impacted by technology use.
Before seeing clients at Therapy 2.0, Cayetana was trained in high school and college counseling settings. To date, she has spoken at conferences, class seminars and college counseling centers on topics including (1) digital rumination; (2) play processes in therapy with adults; and (3) practitioner empathy-building in clinical work with Incel clients.
As a license-eligible psychotherapist working under the supervision of Dr. Ariane Thomas, PsyD., J.D. Cayetana is warm, engaging - and when appropriate - fun. Her approach is direct, kind and enthusiastic. Her clients are empowered to take the lead in session, whether they need a compassionate ear, analysis & insight, science-backed skill-building & tools, or direct and respectful feedback.
Cayetana works in two key areas:
Internet Use
Cayetana's specialist focus is driven by communities & diagnoses impacted by internet use. This includes (a) individuals affiliated with internet subcutures; (b) neurodiversity; (c) behavioral addictions; (d) Internet Use Disorder; and (e) Problematic Internet Use. To deep dive into her focus, make sure to check out the entire Therapy 2.0 website!
Transdiagnostic Interventions
Cayetana has additional clinical interest(s) in transdiagnostic processes and interventions.
To clarify, some symptoms of mental illness (like rumination) and some therapy interventions (like mindfulness) are relevant to a wide range of diagnoses, like depression, anxiety, and even trauma & stressor disorders. When clinically appropriate, Cayetana deploys transdiagnostic tools and interventions to supercharge wellbeing & capitalize upon growth potential.
Cayetana spent over a decade working at the intersection of design, digital marketing and user data collection. She exclusively worked with small businesses & organizations with outsized impact in their respective industries.
Over the years, as digital marketing tools became increasingly sophisticated, Cayetana realized a wide gap had emerged. People outside tech and digital marketing had little knowledge of these tools' power to influence thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It was this insight that prompted her mission-driven career shift.
Cayetana absolutely loves internet culture & Reddit is her favorite spot.
Her favorite subreddits are r/AskHistorians, r/GrilledCheese, r/HumansBeingBros, r/OnlyFlans*, r/SemioticsCulture, r/SuccessionTV (and r/wallstreetbets before 2020). She begrudgingly admits to loving an occasional & unexpected Rick Roll, and she hopes to one day make a decent therapy meme.
*This is not a typo. Cayetana grew up eating large quantities of Flan, a South American custard dessert. She appreciates the wordplay of the subreddit's name as well as the small community dedicated to posting & commenting upon photos of this delicious treat.
